Movie Reviews: Becoming Jane.

Posted by: Rowena in , , , ,

Starring: Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy
Rating: PG-13
Grade: B

The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisley, nephew to the very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. Now, the couple, whose flirtation flies in the face of the sense and sensibility of the age, is faced with a terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune.

On Friday when I was home sick from work, I watched a bunch of movies. This was one of them. I have wanted to see this movie for quite some time and so I sat down and watched this on my laptop.

I really enjoyed it.

I know that this movie got flack from some people because nobody was really certain of why Jane stayed single or whatever but meh, I didn't care. I really enjoyed this movie. I really enjoyed Jane's relationship with Tom. And who knew that James McAvoy was such a cutie patootie.

He's a really good historical hero. I was digging him, I know that Ames didn't care for Anne's neck but it didn't bother me in the least and I was looking at it too. haha. I thought this book was good and though I can't remember if I've ever read any of her books, I really want to read her books now.

I liked this peek into Jane's life and I understood that at the end, she had to do what she had to do. She's a better person than me because had I been given the same choice, I would have chose the other choice. I was kind of pissed that he got to live out his life and have children and all that where Jane didn't. But then again, when Tom called his daughter's name, I was like, "Awwwwwww, he still hearts her."

Gotta love this movie, I did. You should definitely check this out if you're a JA fan and even if you're not, you should check this out.

It was good.

Resident Evils

Posted by: ~ames~ in , , , ,

A while back, Rowena did a review on Will Smith's I am Legend. And Mollie commented on how much better the Resident Evil trilogy is. LOL So I took it upon myself to watch all 3 movies today - because I'm a loser with nothing better to do. Just kidding - I did get other stuff done, i.e. interacted with humans, took out the garbage...you know. So its not like I sat on the couch all day, although my mom will beg to differ.

So first Resident Evil - I really enjoyed it! As soon as it was done, I had my little bro (who had been hounding me for a while to see these) pop the second movie in.
Was I ever in for a surprise watching Resident Evil: Apocalypse! Oded Fehr, hottie extraordinaire (from the Mummy) was in it! LOL Seriously, it doesn't take much to impress me. At the end, I was like, Ok, I'm still digging it.
So real life intruded for a bit - also the fact that I didn't have Resident Evil: Extinction on hand. So while I was helping with supper, I looked up the trailer, because I remember seeing it, but thinking, Meh. So yeah, after having watched the first two, I was really looking forward to Extinction.

In the end? I was a little bit disappointed with Extinction - but I still found it enjoyable. I hated that hottie Oded kicked the bucket, but at least he went out in style! LOL

If you like zombie movies, and you haven't seen these, go check them out. They're good times. :P

Sweeny Todd

Posted by: Isabel in , , ,

Benjamin Barker, a man unjustly sent to prison by a lecherous judge, vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again."

Ames: Was Sweeney Todd what you expected?

Izzy: Yes and No. Yes, cause I knew the story more or less. No because the blood was just... not gory, but there was a lot. Yes I knew there would be blood.. but I guess.. the way how to explain it. A little over the top. Does that make sense?

What about you?

Ames: LOL It makes sense. For me, I didn't know the story but I was expecting the gore. I'm a big fan of Tim Burton, so I knew I was in for a bloodfest. :P I'm so morbid.

What did you think of Johnny Depp's singing? Did you like the songs?

Izzy: I thought Johnny Depp was pretty good. Didn't know he could sing. My favorite song I would have to say is Joanna, then Worst Pies in London.

Is it me, or did Joanna look alot like Christina Ricci in Sleepy Hallow?

Ames: LOL I was surprised too at Johnny's singing - but I also realized he was in a musical before, that I never saw. It was called Cry Baby - he was really young. I liked Worst Pies in London and the opening song, There's a hole in the world and the people that inhabit it are full of shit..or something like that. That's a funny song. :P

I was going to mention Joanna. And yes, she does look like Christina Ricci. But kind of odd looking too. Tim Burton is good at finding eccentric looking characters.

Ok, did you know it was going to end the way it did? I didn't! It kind of mad me sad.

Izzy: Oh yeah! I remember Cry Baby but I didn't think it was a mucial. lol. I've never seen that one.

That one song.. by the sea... I like how Johnny depp is just sitting there sulking while homegirl is fantazing about their life together. ha ha.

Yeah I did. Once they started dancing, I was just waiting.. waiting for something. And then I was like.. there it is. But it was kind of sad.

Ames: I wasn't sad he threw the chick in the fire. She was not so nice in the end.

I liked that song too, when Johnny's a lump on a log while she's fantasizing about the kind of life they could lead.

What happened to his daughter though? Did she escape with her sailor boy? That was never clarified. You know?

Izzy: Oh now, I wasn't sad about that. Just sad he killed his wife. Although, throwing the other chick in the fire.. I thought he would slit her throat.

Ha ha. I love the expressions on his face and then he looks all "ewww" When he has to kiss her. LOL!

I'm thinking they did escape and had a HEA. It's not revealed but that's what I beleive.

Have you seen the musical? Does the movie make you want to see the musical?

Ames: I don't think so. LOL Have you seen the musical? Would you want to see it?
Isn't Alan Rickman (the Judge) so good at playing villains? He's Severus Snape and he was the Sheriff in the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie. He's such a baddie. Pretty women...LOL

What did you think of Helena Bonham Carter? Her voice was a little too high pitched for my liking, but I felt like she suited the role very well.

Izzy: No, I haven't seen the musical. It is coming to town this summer. I wouldn't mind watching it though. Just to see how they do some of the stuff on stage. Mainly, the killings. Morbid I know.

I love Alan Rickman. I think he's kind of sexy. LOL! He is what made me have a little thing for snape. I'm sick I know. He did surprise me with this voice. I like that song too, Pretty Women. What I don't get, is how could the Judge not recognize Sweeney Todd and the Borat character did? Makes no sense. lol.

Helena Bonham Carter, her voice was ok. Not great but it was decent. I thought she was perfect for the role. What did you think of here withholding the information about Sweeney Todd's wife? I get she was in love with him but in a way she was no different than the Judge.

Ames: Oh man, I thought I was the only one! LOL Good to know we're both sick. hehe

As for her letting Sweeney think his wife was dead - ugh, you're right in saying she's no better than the Judge. BUT - did you see his wife? LMAO So maybe she did him a favor? I'm awful, I know. :P

Izzy: Yeah. I mean.. Hmm,

I understand she might have been looking out for him. Cause his wife was... a sandwich short of a picnic basket BUT... I think she was more thinking of herself. I think she withheld the info more for her than trying to protect him. You know what I mean? Cause who is to say once she realized who Sweeney was, the wife might have come back to her senses. And at least Sweeney would have had the choice to let his wife go or be with Ms. Lovett.

Ames: Oh yeah, Mrs. Lovett didn't tell him for her own purposes. She did it for herself! LOL

Izzy: yeah she did.

You know what bothered me most about the movie. Was when he killed Borat, ( i forget his character's name.) The way his body just spazzed out and the blood gushing out. I was all... ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Lol.

What did you think of Johnny Depp's voice?
So.. would recommend the movie to other people?

Ames: I laugh at gory scenes, so when he killed Borat, it didn't bother me. LOL I forget that character's name...his fake name started with a P and it was Italian. But the little boy slitting Johnny's throat-that kind of bothered me. Just cuz it was a little kid.

I liked Johnny's voice. As long as his voice wasn't high pitched, I knew I would be happy. But it wasn't as wonderful as some people led me to believe.

I would recommend this movie to people I know very well and could judge their tastes...or any fan of Tim Burtons.

Izzy: See and the little boy killing Johnny didn't bother me. I don't know why. But my sister is all, "He totally lied to HBC. He said no one would ever harm her and look what happened!" I told her at least he avenged her. lol. She also said, "who in their right mind thought to make this into a musical." lol

I liked Johnny's voice too. Better than I expected.

I would recommend this movie to people who I think would enjoy it. Those who like musicals and Tim Burton. If you're squeamish about blood.. probably want to stay away. Just listen to the soundtrack.

Which... damn, I don't have. I do have: Worst Pies in London, Poor Thing, Johanna, The Johanna with Anthony, Johnny Depp and the hag singing and Not While I'm around. But I want Pretty Women too and now By the Sea is growing on me. Maybe I should buy the thing.

Ames: I don't think I'll buy the soundtrack. I have to really love a movie to buy the soundtrack. And plus, that's what youtube is for!

So since we're on the topic of youtube, here are some videos:

I MISS MY SHOWS!

Posted by: Rowena in ,

With all the talk about the new Beverly Hills 90210 making the gossip rounds, it got me thinking about shows that I used to love just as much as I used to love 90210. There are plenty of shows that I remember watching and loving as a youngun'...so many shows to choose from and I totally miss a whole lot of them. I'm going to attempt to remember my top 10 missed favorite shows from back in the day, feel free to do this on your own blog or list them here in the comments, it's always nice to remember isn't it?

On with my list...

1. Beverly Hills 90210. I remember staying up late on Thursday nights (when it first came on) to see the latest round of drama that went down at West Beverly High. I remember all of the different characters and I most remember my eternal love for Dylan McKay. LOL! I used to love me some Dylan McKay and oh gosh, I remember for Christmas one year, I got 2 ginormous posters, one of the entire cast at the beach during summer (it was the one where they were holding that surfboard) and then one of Dylan McKay on his beloved motorcycle...*sigh* Those were the days.

I remember cheering on Brandon and Andrea and wishing I knew where the heck The Peach Pit was. I remember how much I wanted Dylan to cheat on Brenda when she was in Paris with Kelly and I totally remember the scene when Brenda comes back from Paris (after her little fling with Superman Dean Cain) and Dylan and Kelly tell her about what happened between them over the summer. Then I remember the summer before their senior year and I remember when David Silver was a geek and then turned all uber cute on us...gosh, does anyone remember and miss this show as much as I do? Is anyone going to watch the new 90210? They've already cast Dylan...will he be as cool? I don't think so...

2. FRIENDS. This will always be that show that I will miss seeing new episodes of. It's one of those shows that you can watch over and over again and never get sick of. All 6 of the friends were always so funny, in their own ways and they each brought something to the show that just meshed well with everything. I miss seeing Joey make a fool of himself and I miss hearing Phoebe's retarded songs and Rachel's airheadedness and not to mention Monica and Chandler are their funny moments and then you can't forget about Ross and his salmon colored shirt....haha, so many memories with this show, I only wish there were more memories to add to the pile...this sure was one of the goods, don't you think?

3. Felicity. I watched this show from the very first episode to the very last one. I cheered Felicity on from big hair days to bad hair days to no hair days. LOL. I was such a big Felicity and Noel fan that I booed Ben's interference, even though he was the reason Felicity was at that college and put into Noel's line of vision. I hated Hannah with a passion and wanted to learn the piano to be BETTER than her...and I just wanted those two (Felicity and Noel) to always end up together. They were each other's lobsters. haha. I even remember Eli, remember how hot Eli was? How about the Pink Power Ranger, Julie? I hated her..when she got with Ben, I wanted to slap her silly and cut her hair in her sleep and even after they broke up, I didn't like her...I hated her. I still do, as a matter of fact. And how can I forget to mention Javier? Javier was the cutest man in the world and oh so funny...gosh I miss this show!

4. Alias. I remember back in the day when all me and Grace would talk about besides the books we were reading was what was happening on Alias. We were such huge Michael Vartan fans (and still are, VARTON HO'S FOREVER BABY! haha) and even bigger Michael Vaughn vans. We were always pulling for Sydney and Vaughn to somehow find a way to be together and through all of the exploding buildings and fighthing of the bad guys, the Alias producers never failed to entertain the socks right off of us. There would be times when our emails would be out of this world long, just so that we can gush more about our beloved Vaughn...man, was I sad to see this one go. Even if I stopped watching it partway through that last season or the last couple of seasons, right now, I'm missing my Vaughn. I remember when I needed a Vaughn fix every hot damn week in order to make it through the week...haha. Oh good times, good times.

5. Once and Again. Does anyone remember this show? It was about Rick Sammler and Lily Manning getting together after both of their divorces and with kids of their own. Trying to date again after the divorce and trying to get your kids to get along. It starred Billy Campbell and Sela Ward with Evan Rachel Wood as Billy's daughter and Shane West as his son? Do you guys remember this show? My sisters and I used to watch this show ALL.THE.TIME. Every week, we were planted right in front of the T.V. watching what drama this week would bring in the Manning and Sammler's household. I remember thinking that Eli was so effing hot and him and Jessie (Evan Rachel Wood) seem to have done well for themselves after the show's demise...I wonder what's going on with Grace (ohh I hated her in this show) and Zoe...I haven't heard of them after the show came to an end..whatever happened to them? Gosh this show was another good one. I miss it!

Alright, ladies let's see those lists...what shows do you miss the most and wish were still on?

America's Next Top Model

Posted by: ~ames~ in ,

Is anyone else watching America's Next Top Model this season? Last night's show kind of surprised me. I did not expect Claire to be sent home. But hopefully Lauren can improve and become less "frankensteiny." Those aren't my words, but the words of one of the judges.

Anyway, two funny things happened in this episode. First, the girls were posing on a plastic sheet in water (see above picture). Well Claire wanted to slide onto the plastic and instead did a face dive. She konked her face and wrenched her neck. Crazy girl - you're not going to bounce on plastic!

Second funny thing - Nigel said Dominic's hair was chanelling There's Something About Mary. And it was!! Her hair was sticking straight up at one point! LOL She looked crazy.

Hell's Kitchen

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!!

So the fourth season of Hell's Kitchen started yesterday. Woot. I became addicted to this show because of my papa. You can read the recap HERE.

For the first time ever, each team was lead by a team captain...but yeah, the chosen captains (decided upon by the whole team) did such a bad job that anyone could have done better than them. Bobby, he called himself the Black Gordon Ramsey, tanked! He calls himself a general? No way, he stood behind his team and refused to help them out.

In the end, stay at home dad Dominic who was sent home first. His cluelessness in the kitchen, standing in place, holding scallops in the palm of his hand - well no wonder!

I love this show. hehe

Are you going to watch this season?
