Movie Review: Bride Wars

Posted by: ~ames~ in , , ,

Starring: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway & Bryan Greenberg (woot!)

Movie Description from Yahoo movies:  Liv and Emma are best friends who since childhood have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal "must have" list: a ceremony at New York's ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel. Now, at age 26, they're both about to get married; they're about to realize their dreams; and they're about to live happily ever after. Or maybe not. When a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates--they're now to be married on the same date!--Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test. Liv, a successful lawyer who is used to getting what she wants, including the perfect job and the perfect man, won't settle for anything less than the perfect wedding she has dreamed of for years. Emma, a schoolteacher who has always been good at taking care of others, but not so much in looking after herself, discovers her inner Bridezilla and comes out swinging when her own dream wedding is imperiled. Now, the two best friends who'd do anything for each other find themselves in a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners struggle that threatens to erupt into all-out war.

Grade: B-/C+

I teeter on the edge of what to grade this movie.  I had quite a few laughs and it was a funny movie, but I can see why this movie didn't get great reviews.  All that aside, I had a good time watching this movie and it was pure escapism.  And it was better than I thought.

So Emma (Hathaway) and Liv (Hudson) have been BFF since they were little and both share a dream of getting married at the Plaza Hotel.  Going through Liv's closet, they come across a ring box from Tiffany's.  Liv is sooo excited and she can't wait for her man to ask her to marry him.  But lo and behold Emma's man asks her to marry him first.  This freaks Liv out so she basically demands that her boyfriend ask her to marry him.  LOL  So now both Emma and Liv are engaged and they make that trip to the wedding planner of their dreams and both miraculously get dates at the Plaza in June.  But something happens and these BFFs get booked for the same day at the same time.  But they had always planned on the other being the maid of honor so both expect the other to do another venue at another time.  Liv is fully expecting Emma to cave because that's what Emma does, she's a people pleaser and always puts others first.  But for once, Emma wants to be number one too.  (This is a really funny scene because that's how she says one, I want to be number one too - it just sounds funny).  So then the antics begin to start sabotaging each other and it's kind of freaky how quickly girlfriends can turn on each other.  You know I'm not lying - all it takes is one misunderstanding and then both their back up and both refuse to cave in.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching this movie (my aunt and I were spending some QT together) but I say wait for the DVD.  I recommend the DVD.  LOL

Vicky Christina Barcelona is my pick for this week. Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johanssen, Javier Bardem? Hotness times three, imo. I'm definitely renting this.
Another one I'm for sure renting. Edward Norton has got it. Whatever it is, he has it. I love watching this guy act. And Colin Farrel isn't too shabby either. I love Irishmen. What can I say?
Dad went and saw this in the theater, said it wasn't too bad. Patrick Wilson is in this movie, another good guy to watch. Yum.
I liked Open Season - didn't realize a number 2 was coming out. I think my brother wants to see it, so I'll check it out at the same time. On the sly, you know? LOL
Meh, although it stars one of my fave actors from the NBC show The Office, not sure if I'm going to see this now or wait for it to be on tv. We shall see.

Movie Review: City of Ember

Posted by: ~ames~ in , ,

Ok, I'm going to do my own movie description because the one I found was as long as the book this movie is based on. LOL

So the world is ending, and some scientists build a refuge underground and they set it up to last for 200 years.  The city is powered by a huge generator and the mayor of this city is in charge of the exit instructions to return to the surface after 200 years.  But one of the mayors dies and the box is lost.  So now time has run out and the City of Ember is dealing with a dwindling food supply and blackouts that last longer and longer.  No one knows that there was a timeline to how long citizens remain in the city and so they all continue on, living an increasingly unsecure life.

But there are some who question the rules and laws of their city.  Such citizens are Dune and Lina, two teenagers who are friends and both going through the same rite of passage to the youth of Ember.  It's called assignment day and this is where the mayor comes along with a bag full of jobs and the teens randomly select their lot in life.  Lina picks "Pipeworks" and Dune picks "messenger."  They quickly switch because Dune wants a chance to get to the generator (thinking he can fix it or discover the cause of the blackouts) and Lina yearns to be a messenger.
So things start happening in Ember that Lina and Dune notice and they become embroiled in a plot to find a way out of Ember.  Which is treason.  So they're on the run while time is running out.

City of Ember is based on a young adult novel, but as a movie, I see no problem with adults enjoying it.  I know I did!  I love these kinds of movies (think of the Matrix LOL) that have conspiracy theories and underground worlds.  I'm such a geek.  But yeah, if you want to get sucked into a different world - check out City of Ember.

A young man named Tristan (Charlie Cox) tries to win the heart of Victoria (Sienna Miller), the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. His journey takes him to a mysterious and forbidden land beyond the walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine (Claire Danes). However, Tristan is not the only one seeking the star. A king's (Peter O'Toole) four living sons - not to mention the ghosts of their three dead brothers - all need the star as they vie for the throne. Tristan must also overcome the evil witch, Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer), who needs the star to make her young again. As Tristan battles to survive these threats, encountering a pirate named Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) and a shady trader named Ferdy the Fence (Ricky Gervais) along the way, his quest changes. He must now win the heart of the star for himself as he discovers the meaning of true love.

Stardust

Ok. I'll try and give you the plot of the movie.

The magical world beyond the wall, there is a king dying. He summons his three remaining sons. He had seven but four were murdered by remaining living brothers. You see, only one son can become the king's heir. So tradition the sons all try to kill each other. The surviving son is king. Just as the king makes an announcement, one of the sons is pushed out the window. His ghosts joins the 4 ghosts hovering about. The kings takes off his ruby necklace. As it turns into a diamond he says, "he of royal blood" who find the stone and turns it ruby again will be king. He throws the necklace out the window. The two remaining brothers must find the necklace before the other does.

As the necklace is thrown out the window, it hits a star named Yvaine. It knocks her out of the night sky and sends her crashing to earth. Well the magical side. Three ugly old witches witness this and set out to find the Yvanine. The heart of a glowing star can restore youth and beauty. So they want to find Yvaine and kill her so they can be beautiful again. Lamia takes the remains of the last star they captured so that she can be beautiful and sets out to capture Yvaine. However, every time she uses magic, Lamia loses a bit of her youth and beauty.

Tristan lives on the other side of the wall that separates the magic world from the real world. He is love with a girl named Victoria. But Victoria is not interested in Tristan. She tells him that Humphrey has gone all the way to another town to buy her a ring. Tristan announces he would go the ends of the earth for her. When they see the falling star (Yvaine) Tristan said he would find the star and bring it back to Victoria. Well now Victoria is interested in Tristan and says "You have a week."

So, we have all these people looking for Yvaine. Tristan gets to her first by way of a magic candle. Which he didn't know was magic. While bringing her back, they run into the princes, Lamia and a pirate. The pirate, Captain Shakespeare helps them by not revealing Yvaine is a star and by giving them safe passage. He notices that Yvaine is falling for Tristan.

I watched this movies because someone said if I liked Princess Bride, I would like this movie. I did enjoy the movie however Princess Bride this is not. It's still a cute movie though. And even though it seems likes a lot going on, it's not confusing to follow and the story flows. Check this one out if you get a chance.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Posted by: Isabel in , , ,

Two lifelong platonic friends, strapped for cash and in debt, decide to make a porno.

I really liked it this movie. It was funny! Had both me and my hubby were cracking up laughing. There was a bit of a love story in this. TNA for hubby. It had everything. There was a moment where I was like, "No they didn't" but it was still funny.

Zack and Miri have been BFFs forever. They live with each other in some rinky dink apartment and are broke. So broke, their water and electricity are shut off. So they decide to make a porno to raise the money to pay their bills. When Zack and Miri have sex for the first time ever (a scene for the porno), something happens that they didn't quite expect.

They fall in love but are afraid to admit because they promised things would get weird.

I thought this movie was cute and funny! I must have for my movie collection.

Movie Review: Wanted.

Starring: Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy
Rating: R
Wena's Grade: C

25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors--including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan--Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

This movie was a okay, pretty unbelievable, pretty out of this world but still, pretty okay. It was entertaining that's for sure and it had me thinking, "WTF? Yeah right" more than once but none of that took away from my enjoyment of the film. Angelina is as gorgeous as ever and I swear, she should make these kinds of movies as long as she can because she pulls off that bad girl role so well. She's the person that I picture all of those tough as nail heroines that we all read about in our books because she's that tried and true ass kicking heroine.

I knew there was going to be a twist in this movie but heck if I could figure out what the twist was going to be and when it finally came at us, it knocked me on my ass and I felt stupid for not thinking of it before it was revealed but aside from the roll my eyes down the street action, it was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours not that I would necessarily spend another couple of hours rewatching this movie or anything.

Should you watch? Sure, but don't break your back trying to get it or anything.

Grey's Anatomy- Wish You Were Here

Posted by: Isabel in ,

Rowena and I were talking yesterday. She asked what happened on Grey's last week. Here are our emails:

Mmm nothing much. Meredith and Christina aren't talking to other. Sloan is trying to stay away from Lexie. Izzy told Alex that she sees Denny and does the nasty with him. Alex is like whatever. He makes Izzy a birthday cake but it looks like a cake featured on cake wrecks.

LOL, Awww really? Why are Meredith and Christina not talking? What's up with Christina and Owen? Are they getting closer and closer? Sloan and Lexie already did the ditty right? Lexie is pregnant in real life so I'm thinking on the show, she's gonna end up pregnant with Sloan's baby, WOO HOO! So Alex doesn't believe her or doesn't care?

Ok. So Christina found out about the interns practicing on themselves. And she told them to stop. When Chief was talking to Meredith and Christina, Lexie thought they were getting in trouble (because of when they tried to do the appendix surgery, Meredith and Christina had to fix it). So Lexie told chief not to blame them cause Christina had already told them to stop.

Well Meredith was shocked Christina knew and Chief got mad at Christina and Meredith. Except Meredith said she didn't know. Christina got mad that Meredith didn't back her up. Which... how was Meredith supposed to do that when she didn't even know.

So Christina is supposed to have the solo surgery but can't because of the intern thing, so she has pick someone to take her place. Meredith says she deserves it but do what you have to do. Christina picks Alex. Meredith is upset and I forget what Christina said but something about Meredith taking it personally. Which is dumb cause Christina expected Meredith to use her relationship with Chief to get her out of trouble. UGH!

So that's why they aren't talking. Although I think it's more on Christina side. Cause every time Meredith would come around, Christina would leave. But both are being dumb.

Owen is still being hot and cold with Christina. She told him to stop doing that. Sloan and Lexie did do the wild thing. And looks like they are gonna do it again. And Callie is still lusting over the one intern.

What one intern? What is up with Callie and the interns? So is it like a love match between Lexie and Sloan or just a booty call type deal?

Oh okay, I think I remember that stuff with Christina and Meredith. Anything new and interesting with Meredith and Derek?

No, Callie is lusting after a intern, who was Meredith's best friend. But Callie is trying to be good.

As of right now, it just looks like a booty call between sloan and lexie. Mmm, nothing big with Meredith and Derek. But Derek tried to dance it out with Meredith (since Christina wasn't there) and Derek should not dance.

So that's basically what was going on. Hunt, Derek, Christina and Meredith's patient is some guy on death row. George still has nothing to do. Chief is still annoyed with the hospital being 12. Although Hunt asking Derek about the Seahawks to get out of the line of fire between Meredith and Christina was funny.

My weekly dose of Scofield is about to come to an end. Prison Break has been canceled. Although, I kind of did see it coming. I thought this season started off strong but the last couple of episodes have kind of sucked.

You have Self betraying the gang. Then self working with the gang to get Scylla back. Micheal having his surgery and now he's working against the gang. And Michael and Linc's mom being alive. WTF?

All I know is that Sara better not betray Michael. Michael and Sara better have their happily ever after or I'll be very upset.

TV: One Tree Hill- A Hand To Take Hold of the Scene.

Posted by: Rowena in , ,

It's been a couple of weeks since I've written up my thoughts on my favoritest show in the whole entire world, One Tree Hill. Last week, the show came back from hiatus and I'll tell you one thing, that man pictured to your left right there is a huge reason why I'm so in love with this show.

There isn't much drama on the show right now because Sam is saved by Brooke and Brooke kicked some serious Q's killer ass last week. I'm glad that it was Brooke that took him down and not Julian, who by the way looked like a total spaz just standing there watching Brooke beat up Q's killer but whatever, I heart Julian. If he turns out to be this psycho ex boyfriend of Peyton's, I can't even bring myself to care because I seriously heart this guy on the show.

The way that he's stepped up and helped Brooke find Sam and then just the way that he is with Brooke, I facking love it. I've got to wonder what his deal is though, it's got to be that he's not over Peyton and he's come back to try to win her back but things are going to get messy when he connects with Brooke. I think maybe he's going to use Brooke to get over Peyton and Brooke is going to find out about that and she's going to go back to being unlucky in love because I can't help but wonder if Owen's completely out of Brooke's life. Do you guys think he is? I'm not so sure.

I thought Brooke was soooo cute when she was trying to figure out what the heck her meet up with Julian really was...was it a date? a business meeting? Seriously, when she was up there doing the whole drinks thing, I couldn't stop laughing because she's so cute and when Julian brought the wine, I did a little happy dance for her because she totally deserves to have someone, she needs someone to share her troubles with and though I'm happy it's not Lucas, I want it to be Julian. I'm a really big Brulian fan and seriously, how cute was their kiss? Awwwww, the whole lead up to their first kiss was too cute and it had me all grinning like an idiot because I could care less about the other storylines, I wanted to see nothing but Brulian last night and I was rewarded with a first kiss, YAY!

Lucas and Peyton are kind of boring me right now with their almost married bliss. There's no kind of drama behind them so I'm thinking there's going to be complications with the pregnancy and they're going to have some kind of scare just to shake up their storyline a little bit. I still love them to pieces but I find myself more interested in the others on the show then them and that's never happened before.

Nathan and Haley continue to be amazingly cute, especially Nathan with him trying to make Chase look like a stud on his first date with Mia. Goodness, Nathan grew up to be such a good man which is the complete opposite of his Dad and speaking of his Dad, where the hell is Dan? Did he end up dying or something? I haven't seen him in a while and where the hell is Nanny Deb?

Chase and Mia are a cute couple too, all this couple swapping should probably disgust me but it doesn't, I like Mia and Chase and I'm rooting them on....go 'head Stephen from Laguna Beach. The whole Mouth and Millicent thing makes me roll my eyes, I don't care about it. I think that Millicent was so stupid and though Mouth was no angel (or too much of an angel) he didn't deserve what Millicent did but whatever, those two irritate me so I don't pay them much attention.

Sam and Jack. I think these two are a little cute couple as well, I wonder what's going to happen to Jack now that he's orphaned again...where is he going to end up? Is he going to end up forgetting Sam or turn out like his brother? Curious minds want to know...

Next week is going to be another cute episode and I'm all excited about it. More Julian and Brooke and more Julian and Lucas. Woo hoo, can't frickin' wait!

Until next week....

Zombie Strippers

Posted by: Isabel in , , ,

In the not too distant future, a secret government chemo-virus gets released into conservative Sartre, Nebraska and lands in an underground strip club. As the virus begins to spread, turning the strippers into 'Super Zombie Strippers', the girls struggle with whether or not to conform to the new 'fad' even if it means there is no turning back.

No, this isn't a porno even though it stars Jenna Jameson. My cousin owns this movie and told us we need to watch it. He said it was so horrible that its good. Liar. It's dumb, stupid and just plain corny.

There was nothing else to watch and so we popped this movie in. Basically its about a star stripper that turns into a zombie. But being a zombie improves her polel dancing skills. Soon all the guys just want see zombie strippers. All the other strippers get jealous and want to be zombies too.

You know how sometimes a movie is so bad that it's funny. This movie isn't even that. So if you are looking for a really bad movie with zombie strippers that shoot ping pong balls and cue balls from their va jay jay, then this is the movie for you.

The House Bunny

Posted by: Isabel in , ,

Shelley Darlington has lived at the Playboy mansion for the last nine years. She is Hef's favorite and acts like a den mother to the other girls. On her birthday, she is unceremoniously evicted from Hef's pad for 'being too old.' Homeless and without essential skills, Shelley wanders around L.A. until she finds a new job--the housemother at the most unpopular sorority on campus.

It reminded me a lot of Sydney White. How they both move in with the misfits. They help turn the boys/girls around and try to save the house. But Sydney White was cuter I think.

This one was a meh for me.

Gossip Girl: In the Realm of the Basses

Posted by: ~ames~ in , ,

With Chuck MIA since his father's funeral, Uncle Jack arrives on the Upper East Side to help Chuck pick up the messy pieces, but first he has to find him. Trying her best to forget her last painful exchange with Chuck, Blair focuses her attention on being accepted into the most prestigious ladies club in the city, Colony Club. Jenny returns to Constance Billard and immediately takes on Penelope and her posse of mean girls, but no one is going down without a valiant Gossip Girl-worthy fight.

So I missed the show right before this one, and Bart Bass DIES. And it also came out that Lily had Rufus's love child and gave it up for adoption? What a pivotal episode to miss. CRAP!!
OOhhh, and Blair slept with Chuck's uncle?? WHAT?

Yeah, a lot went on in this latest episode.  The most dramatic being Chuck almost killing himself by falling off the roof of his reacquired burlesque club and Blair telling him she's there for him. Always.

The other interesting thing to happen was Jenny going back to school and coming up against Blair's cronies, namely Penelope.

The most ho-hum thing to happen yet again is Serena and Dan getting back together. Been there, done that. But now with the possibility of a sibling in existence, their new found love may be torn apart again.

True Beauty

Posted by: ~ames~ in , ,

So ABC debuted a new show tonight - True Beauty - a show about beautiful people who think they are being judged on their looks, but are really being judged on what's inside.  You know, beauty is skin deep and all that.

The host is Vanessa Minnillo and the judges are Cheryl Tiegs and Nolé Marin.
True Beauty is the brain child of Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks.  Fierce.  LOL

Here's from the website:
The series will determine the True Beauty of six stunning females and four handsome males who will live together in a spectacular Los Angeles mansion as they undergo a series of challenges to determine who is truly the most beautiful.

The gorgeous contestants assume they're being judged solely on their outer appearance. They're only half right; outer beauty is one component the judges are looking for, but contestants are also being evaluated -- unbeknownst to them -- for their INNER beauty as well when they're put through scenarios and situations that require them to make moral decisions.

Each episode will showcase an outer beauty and an inner beauty challenge, during which contestants will be judged on everything from how well they perform in photo shoots to how well they respect their elders. The three judges will observe and critique the contestants' behavior and eliminate one person each week. Only after someone is eliminated will the truth about the show be revealed to him/her, as they watch a video montage of their behavior captured by a hidden camera during the shoot.

At the end of eight episodes, one winner will be declared, a person who is truly beautiful inside and out. That person will receive a cash prize and a spot in PEOPLE magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People issue.

So did anyone watch it? I watched it, I'm intrigued. I admit it. LOL I see a new guilty pleasure looming on the horizon. :P

WooT! One Tree Is Back...

Tomorrow One Tree Hill comes back with fresh episodes and I, for one cannot wait. Because when we left off, Brooke and Julian (possible love story?) are looking for Sam who ran away from home when she found out that her friends were the ones that beat Brooke. Lucas is going through some stuff with the whole movie deal, Nathan is doing the damn thing with Slam Ball and Haley is scared but supportive. Millicent and Owen are about to get it on, YUCK! and Peyton is scared that she might have cancer...so do you see why I'm so excited?

SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO! Check out the previews for the new episode:

Movie Reviews: Pineapple Express.

Posted by: Rowena in , , ,

Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco
Rating: R
Wena's Grade: B

Process server Dale Denton has a grudging business relationship with the laconic Saul Silver, deigning to visit only to purchase Saul's primo product--a rare new strain of pot called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop and the city's most dangerous drug lord, he panics and dumps the Pineapple Express at the scene. When it's traced back to him, Dale and Saul run for their lives--and they quickly discover that they're not just suffering from weed-fueled paranoia. If they survive, these two just might become real friends. All aboard the Pineapple Express.

This movie was facking hilarious. I laughed from the moment the movie began, all the way until the movie ended. For me, it was James Franco that made this movie hilarious. His character never failed to crack me the heck up and man am I happy that I watched this movie.

This movie is about Dale and Saul trying to run from the bad guys because Dale witnessed a murder and the hilarity that ensues. They're on the run, they're trying to stay alive and the crap these two get into is just too frickin' funny.

Anyone who is looking for a movie to make them laugh so much they need to run to the bathroom, this is the movie for you. It was too effing funny and James Franco's in it, what's not to love about that combination?

Review: Gran Torino

Posted by: Rowena in , , ,

Starring: Clint Eastwood,
Rating: R
Wena's Grade: A

Walt Kowalski is a widower, grumpy, tough-minded, borderline-hateful, unhappy old man who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1973 Gran Torino he keeps in cherry condition. When his neighbor Tao, a young Hmong teenager, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Tao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them form the gangs that foul their neighborhood.

I really like watching Clint Eastwood movies. Aside from my chick flicks, I absolutely LOVE watching war movies and though this wasn't a war movie, it featured a war veteran and after watching a whole lot of Band of Brothers yesterday, I was really in the mood to watch and read more military themed books. Well, books that had military vets and men in them.

Now, this movie has nothing to do with the Korean war or any war for that matter but it's the story of a Korean war veteran who's wife died and who's just waiting for his turn to kick the bucket. He's very bitter over his new neighbors, his family and life in general. He's not ashamed to let everyone around him feel his misery either. He pops off at the mouth at every turn and he's not known to have very many friends. Underneath all of the put downs is a very good man and it is his neighbors, an Asian family who find all of this out for themselves.

After his wife's funeral, a string of things happen in his neighborhood and in his life that bring him closer and closer to his neighbors. There's gangs haunting their neighborhood and his health is a big concern and then there's his distant relationship with his own kids. He doesn't connect with his kids and they don't understand him. He needs help around his house and instead of bothering his kids, he asks his neighbor, Tao to help him out and Tao, a good Asian kid is always happy to help.

I really enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed getting to know Mr. Kowalski's surly self and I enjoyed Sue's persistent way of befriending Walt and I enjoyed the friendship that blossomed between Tao and Walt. This whole movie was just a really good movie. The acting was fantastic, the characters were rich and the story moved at an easy pace that just hooked me in right from the very beginning. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to watch something deep and just plain ol' good.

Movie Review: The Duchess

Posted by: ~ames~ in , , ,

Movie description from Yahoo movies: A vibrant beauty and celebrity of her time is trapped in an unhappy triangle with her husband and his live-in mistress. She falls passionately in love with an ambitious young politician, and the affair causes a bitter conflict with her husband and threatens to erupt into a scandal.

Starring: Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Atwell, Charlotte Rampling

Grade: B+

I really enjoyed this movie. Based upon the true life of Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish, The Duchess is a fascinating tale developed from the novel written by Amanda Foreman (you can bet your sweet cheeks I'm buying that book ASAP).

The movie opens with Georgiana Spencer and a group of friends.  Among those friends is Charles Grey, and you can tell there's a connection there.  Watching the young people are Georgiana's mother and William, the Duke of Devonshire.  The Duke is looking for a young wife so he can have his heir.  That's all he demands of a wife, loyalty and an heir.  So the Duke agrees to marry Georgiana.

Georgiana has 2 girls and hovering always in her mind is the male heir that she cannot produce.  On a trip to Bath, Georgiana meets Lady Elizabeth Foster, a woman who's husband has taken her 3 children away from her and beats her.  Georgiana invites Elizabeth to stay with them and eventually William and Elizabeth begin an affair.  Georgiana is heartbroken that her husband has stolen her friend, and is further depressed when William refuses to send Elizabeth away and actually moves her 3 young sons into their home.

Georgiana attempts to strike a deal with William, she'll bless his affair if he can let her be with Charles Gray, the man she truly loves.  William rapes Georgiana and tells her if she gives him a son, she can have Charles.  Georgiana eventually gives William a son and she begins an affair with Charles.  William quickly puts a stop to that and tears the two lovers apart, threatening to take Georgiana's children away from her forever and ruin Charles' political career.

Georgiana's pain only worsens when the child she has with Charles is practically torn from her arms to be raised by Charles' family.

The Duchess is a heartbreaking tale, beautiful to watch and very engrossing.  Everyone's acting is excellent and the costumes were lush.  Good stuff!!
